The Best Rothenburg Tours

Seventeen tours, ranked by what they actually deliver — not by who pays us most.

We rank these on four things: how much time you actually get in Rothenburg, the quality of the guiding, the value for money, and what real travellers say after the fact. Ratings and review counts come straight from GetYourGuide and are checked regularly.

We earn a commission if you book through the links below, at no cost to you — which is why the ranking is what it is rather than what a supplier would like it to be.

How we rank these tours

We look at four things, in this order:

  • Time in Rothenburg. A day trip that gives you ninety minutes has not really shown you the town.
  • Guiding. Rothenburg’s stories — the Master Draught, the Free Imperial City, 1945 — are what bring the stones to life.
  • Value. Not the lowest price — the most experience per euro. Private tours priced per group can beat group tours for families.
  • What reviewers say afterwards. We read the three-star reviews, not only the five-star ones.
Our honest advice: if you can, stay one night rather than coming on a day trip. The coach tours arrive around 11:00 and leave by late afternoon; the Night Watchman starts at 20:00. The difference between midday Rothenburg and evening Rothenburg is enormous.

Good to know

Choosing a tour

What is the best Rothenburg tour from Munich?

For most people, the Rothenburg and Romantic Road coach day trip — around €80, with thousands of reviews. For a private alternative, the Munich–Harburg–Dinkelsbühl–Rothenburg private day trip is excellent.

Is the Night Watchman tour worth it?

Absolutely — it is the highlight of many visitors’ trip. The public tour is inexpensive and needs no booking; the private version is ideal for families or if the public tour is not running.

Do tours include museum entry?

Usually not. The Medieval Crime Museum, the Town Hall tower and the Christmas Museum are paid separately unless the listing states otherwise.

Are tours available in other languages?

Yes. Many private guides work in German, English and other languages on request, and several day trips offer audio guides in multiple languages. Check the language options on each listing.
