Where to Stay in Rothenburg

Stay the night and the lanes are yours after dark. Here is where to sleep.

Most visitors see Rothenburg between 11:00 and 16:00, on a coach tour, at the busiest time of day. Staying one night changes the trip completely: the Night Watchman tour, the Plönlein by lamplight, the wall walk at sunrise and breakfast before the crowds arrive.

There are two sensible choices. Inside the walls you sleep in a historic building a few minutes from the Market Square — the full medieval experience, though parking and lifts can be limited. Just outside the walls you get easier parking, often more space and lower prices, and you are still only five to ten minutes on foot from the centre.

Rates below are indicative starting prices for a double room and change constantly with season and demand — every card links out to Trip.com for live availability.

How to choose

  • One night and the romance is the point? Stay inside the walls, as close to the Market Square as you can.
  • Driving the Romantic Road? A hotel just outside the gates saves you the hassle of old-town access and parking.
  • Arriving by train? Hotels near the Röder Gate and Würzburg Gate are closest to the station.
  • Visiting in December? Book as early as possible — ideally several months ahead — and consider a weekday stay.

Booking tips

  • Many historic hotels have no lift and steep stairs; ask if this matters to you.
  • If you are driving, ask your hotel whether you can drive into the old town to unload and where to park.
  • Rooms facing the lanes can be noisier on festival weekends; ask for a courtyard room if you are a light sleeper.
  • Breakfast is often excellent and worth including — it lets you start before the crowds.

Once your bed is sorted, pick the experience: our ranked tour comparison covers the Night Watchman, walking tours and day trips worth adding.

Where to stay: FAQs

Is it worth staying overnight in Rothenburg?

Yes — it is the single biggest improvement you can make to your visit. In the evening and early morning the coach groups are gone, the Night Watchman comes out and the town looks the way it does in photographs.

Can I stay inside the medieval walls?

Yes. Dozens of hotels, inns and guesthouses occupy historic buildings inside the walls, from simple family-run places to elegant four-star hotels.

How much does a hotel in Rothenburg cost?

Expect roughly €110–180 for a double room in a well-rated hotel inside the walls in most of the year, and more in December and on festival weekends. Hotels just outside the walls are often a little cheaper.

Can I drive to my hotel in the old town?

Usually you can drive in to unload, but the old town is restricted and parking is limited. Most hotels will explain the access rules and nearby parking when you book.

When should I book a hotel for the Christmas market?

As early as you can. Weekends in Advent sell out months in advance, especially inside the walls. Weekdays are easier and cheaper.
