Rothenburg has a mild continental climate: warm summers, cold winters and rain spread through the year. The town is beautiful in every season, so the real question is crowds. The short answer is May to June and September to October for weather and space, and Advent if you want the Christmas market.

Spring: April to June
The Tauber valley turns green, the gardens behind the walls come alive and the evenings get long. April can still be chilly, and Easter week is busy, but May and early June are close to perfect. Around Whitsun (Pentecost) the town celebrates the Meistertrunk festival, with the historical play in the Town Hall and costumed groups in the streets.
Summer: July and August
Warm, lively and at its busiest. Day-trip coaches fill the centre from late morning to mid-afternoon, and hotels inside the walls book up. Summer rewards early risers: the Plönlein at 07:30 is yours, and the evenings — Night Watchman tour, beer gardens, sunset from the castle garden — are wonderful.
Autumn: September and October
Our favourite season. The heat eases, the light turns golden and the vineyards and woods of the Tauber valley change colour. In early September the Reichsstadt-Festtage fill the town with costumed history, music and fireworks. October is quieter and ideal for walking.
Winter: November to February
November and January to February are the quietest months: cold, often grey, occasionally snowy, but with the lowest hotel rates and empty lanes. From late November everything changes with the Reiterlesmarkt. December is magical and very busy — especially at weekends — and hotel rooms inside the walls sell out months ahead.
When to avoid
- Midday on summer Saturdays. The Market Square and Plönlein are at their most crowded.
- December weekends if you dislike crowds — visit the Christmas market on a weekday instead.
- January to March if you want every attraction on full hours; some reduce their opening in winter.
Public holidays
On German public holidays (for example Easter Monday, Whit Monday, Ascension Day and 3 October) Rothenburg fills up with domestic visitors, and many shops close. Museums and restaurants usually stay open.
