Rothenburg’s fortifications are among the most complete in Europe: an almost unbroken ring of walls with towers, gates and bastions wrapped around the old town. Much of the eastern and southern circuit carries a covered wooden wall-walk (Wehrgang), and you can still follow it for roughly 2.5 km from the Spital Gate in the south, past the Röder Gate, to the Klingen Gate in the north.
The walls were badly damaged when an air raid on 31 March 1945 destroyed a large part of the eastern old town. They were rebuilt after the war with donations from all over the world, and hundreds of stone plaques set into the walls record the names of the people, families and companies who paid for a metre or two — many of them from the United States and Japan.
Top things to do: Town Walls Walk
Walk from the Spital Gate to the Klingen Gate
Start at the Spital Bastion, a 17th-century double gate with a zigzag passage, climb the steps to the wall-walk and head north. Allow about an hour at a gentle pace, longer if you stop for photos — and you will. Several staircases let you come down into town whenever you like.
Climb the Röder Tower
The Röder Tower beside the Röder Gate is the one wall tower you can climb. For a small fee (paid at the top, seasonal opening) you get a view over the rooftops to the Markus Tower and the Town Hall — and a small exhibition on the 1945 destruction.
Look for the donor plaques
Hunt for the plaques along the Wehrgang: names from Texas, Tokyo, Sydney and a hundred other places. They are a moving record of how the world helped rebuild a town it loved.

How to get there
- Southern start: the Spital Gate, about 10 minutes’ walk south of the Market Square via the Plönlein.
- Eastern access: steps at the Röder Gate, 5 minutes from the station — handy if you arrive by train.
- Northern end: the Klingen Gate, near St. Jakob’s Church and the youth hostel.
Insider tips
- The wall-walk is free and open at all times, but it is unlit in places — bring a phone light after dark.
- The passage is narrow and the roof beams are low: tall visitors should watch their heads.
- It is not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs because of the stairs; the ground-level path along the outside of the walls is a good alternative.
- Combine the walk with the castle garden and the western walls for a full circuit of about 3.5–4 km.
